Artist's Statement

I am drawn to stories of courageous people who take risks and stand up with dignity for their principles. These visual essays commemorate brave individuals around the world whose human rights have been violated.  I hope the viewer will pause, and listen again, to those forgotten after a few days in the headlines.  Their stories are humbling. Witness the courage and remember the names; find hope in their lives.

About

Phyllis has been active in the St. Louis art scene for many years. She was instrumental in developing Craft Alliance in its early days when her art was mainly fiber based. Upon returning to full-time teaching of art, she started working in a more painterly way in mixed media. Her interest in political art started in the battle to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Missouri. Text has been important in her work since that time.

Study trips through India and China with the International Education Consortium and travel in Indonesia furthered her interest in human rights and diverse cultures.

She received her BFA at Southern Illinois University/Carbondale and MAT at Webster University. She is a retired art teacher from University City High School.

Educational Honors
