San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest in Burma (Myanmar) for 18 of the past 23 years. After she was elected President of the National League for Democracy Party in 1990, the ruling Junta took control instead. Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

Ashin led the Buddhist Monks who organized protests in Rangoon, Buma in 2007. Many monks were beaten and have disappeared into jails. Ashin is in hiding in Thailand and has been granted asylum in the USA. Burmese script is from a banner carried by monks to lead the protest. “May the wishes of the people of Burma be fulfilled.”

Mukhtaran Mai: An Honorable Woman MACP-0004 |
Mukhtaran was gang raped in retaliation when her brother was perceived to have dishonored the village. She became a symbol of hope for Pakistani women when her attackers were convicted. Never allowed to go to school, she is responsible for building the first girl’s school in her village. Arabic Script, Qu’ran Chapter 17, Verse 15:…no bearer of burdens shall be made to bear another’s burden.

Malalai is the youngest woman elected to Afganistan’s Parliament. She has survived four assassination attempts and the bombing of her home. Nadia Anjuman MACP-0006 |
Nadia was a member of the Sewing Circle of Herat, women who risked their lives to study literature under the Taliban regime. At age 25 she published her first book of poetry, “Dark Red Flower.” Believing the book brought shame on the family, her husband beat her to death. She had a six month old son. Arabic Script: The Qu’an, Sura 58,a: Allah hears the words of that woman who disagrees with her husband. God hears all and sees all.

Taslima Nasmin MACP-0007 |
Taslima is a Bengali Bangladeshi physician, writer and feminist human rights activist living under an Islamic fatwa since 1993. In 2007 a bounty was again offered for her beheading. The government of Bangladesh has banned most of her fifteen books because of her critical views on religion and the treatment of women under Islam. She has defied the ban by posting her writing on the web in the Bengali language.

Gege has survived attacks and threats in the Democratic Republic of the Congo because of her work in human rights for women. Her network of peace groups in villages trains women activists to work to end violence against women and against rape as a weapon of war. “The rape of women and girls, without distinction of age, by armed men…must be punished as a crime against humanity.”
